TL;DR

Same long-run loss rate. Half the per-100-spin volatility. Maximum drawdown is roughly 60% of the single-column variant. If you want to play the longest possible session for your bankroll, the double column is the correct system. If you want streak excitement, it is not.

01 The question

Players ask me which is "better" - single-column flat or double-column flat. The honest answer is: better at what? They have identical expected value. They have different experiences. The question is which experience your bankroll and emotional capital can sustain longest.

So I stopped guessing. I ran 50,000 spins of each system on identical wheels and counted what actually matters.

02 Method

Single-column system: $10 flat on Column 1 every spin
Double-column system: $10 on Col 1 + $10 on Col 2, every spin ($20 total exposure)
Tracked: running P/L, peak-to-trough drawdown, longest losing streak, longest winning streak, per-100-spin variance

03 Findings: the headline numbers

The interesting columns are the ratios at the bottom. The double-column loses exactly twice as much in absolute dollars - that is just because it stakes twice as much per spin. The house edge is identical. But look at the drawdown and the variance: those drop to 56-61% of the single-column figures despite the doubled stake exposure.

04 Why the variance asymmetry exists

Single-column flat bets are binary: each spin is +2 units or -1 unit. The +2 outcomes cluster in streaks of 1-2; the -1 outcomes cluster in streaks of 2-5. Variance is high because the win-size is large relative to the bet.

Double-column flat bets are ternary: each spin is +1 unit (win on either covered column), -2 units (lose to the third column), or -2 units (lose to zero). Most spins are +1. Losses are rare but slightly larger. The math:

single-column variance per spin= σ² = 0.3243 × 2² + 0.6757 × 1² - 0.0270² ≈ 1.972
double-column variance per spin= σ² = 0.6486 × 1² + 0.3514 × 2² - 0.0540² ≈ 2.052

Per spin the double-column variance is barely higher. But per unit of risk, it is much lower. You are buying smaller, more frequent positive outcomes that smooth the bankroll curve.

05 Findings: the drawdown distribution

The single-column system spent 13.4% of its 50,000 spins in drawdown deeper than $500. The double-column spent only 4.8% in drawdown deeper than $500. That difference is what bankroll preservation actually feels like.

06 What the simulation hides

Two things the simulation does not capture, both of which favour the double-column in practice:

  1. Emotional capital. A 14-spin losing streak on a single column is a session-ending event for most players regardless of bankroll. A 9-spin losing streak on a double column is unpleasant but survivable. The emotional sustainability of the double-column is its largest unmeasured advantage.
  2. Table-max progressions. If you layer a Martingale or D'Alembert on top of either base, the double-column hits the table maximum two steps earlier because both stakes scale together. Pure flat play is where the double-column dominates; progression play complicates the math.

07 The verdict

Use this rule

If your goal is to play the longest possible session on a fixed bankroll, the double column is mathematically and emotionally superior. If your goal is the streaky high-variance excitement of single-column hits, stay single.

I do not recommend the double-column for everyone. The grind is real - +1 unit per win, every win, for hours. For some players that is meditation. For others it is purgatory. Know which one you are before you sit down.
