Outside bets carry their own limits, separate from the inside-bet table minimum. The maximum cap is the silent killer of every progression.
Two limits, not one
Every roulette table in every regulated USA and Canadian casino posts two betting limits, not one. The placards near the dealer's chip rack read something like:
Column bets fall under the outside limits. The minimum is generally 5× the inside minimum. The maximum is generally 4–10× the inside maximum, because outside bets pay smaller multiples and the casino can absorb a larger per-bet exposure.

Always check the placard - and online, always check the operator's published bet limits page. Limits can change without warning, especially during low-traffic hours.
The maximum-bet trap and progressions
The table maximum is what kills every negative progression system. A column Martingale starting at $5 hits the typical $1,000 Vegas Strip cap at the 14th step:
Step 15 is rejected. Your sequence dies one loss short of recovery - and 13 prior losses become a single $1,545 hole that no future bet can recover.
How to size your unit against the table max
A robust column Martingale needs at least 8–9 viable progression steps. Working backwards from a $1,000 maximum and the column Martingale sequence (which roughly doubles every two steps), you want a starting unit no larger than:
Unit ≤ Table Max / 300 for 10+ step progressions.

Inside vs outside max - a frequent confusion
Players sometimes assume the "inside max" applies to all bets. It does not. A $250 inside max table will still happily accept a $1,000 outside column bet. Always look at the lower right of the placard, where outside-bet limits are usually listed separately.
Online limits and the high-stakes loophole
Regulated online operators often run lower limits than land-based casinos - $500 outside max is common. The trade-off is convenience, lower volatility from $0.10 base units, and instant rebuy. Most pro column players use online play to test systems, then move to land-based high-limit rooms when ready to scale.
