Gambling terms glossary

Every term used on Column.bet, defined. Useful when reading the math-heavy articles or assembling a Due-Column ledger.

Bankroll & staking terms

Bankroll. The total capital you have allocated to wagering. Should be entirely separate from rent, groceries, and any non-discretionary spending. Most professional models recommend a bankroll of at least 200× the average individual stake.

Base unit. The smallest stake in a progression sequence. For a column Martingale this is the stake at step 1 (and is also the target profit per cycle).

Flat staking. Betting the same dollar amount on every selection or spin, regardless of prior results. The lowest-variance staking approach.

Negative progression. Any system that increases stake size after a loss to recover prior losses on the next win. Martingale, Fibonacci, Labouchère are negative progressions.

Positive progression. Any system that increases stake size after a win to capture streaks. Paroli is the canonical example.

Stop-loss. A pre-committed maximum loss that ends the session immediately when reached. Non-negotiable.

Take-profit. A pre-committed gain that ends the session immediately when reached. Equally non-negotiable.

Odds & payout terms

Decimal odds. European sportsbook format. 2.00 means even money - $1 wins $1, total return $2. Used in every Due-Column calculation on this site.

American odds. Used by U.S. sportsbooks. −110 means risk $110 to win $100 (decimal 1.909). +120 means risk $100 to win $120 (decimal 2.20).

Fractional odds. Used in U.K. and Irish racing. 2/1 means $2 win on every $1 staked (decimal 3.00). Common at North American thoroughbred tracks too.

House edge. The casino's mathematical expected return as a percentage of every dollar wagered. European roulette: 2.70%. American roulette: 5.26%.

True odds. The fair probability-based payout that would yield a zero house edge. For a column, true odds are 25:12 (≈ 2.083:1) on the European wheel.

Expected value (EV). The average return per dollar wagered, computed as (win_prob × win_amount) − (loss_prob × loss_amount). A negative EV bet loses money on average.

Roulette terms

Outside bet. Any wager placed in the perimeter zone of the felt - red/black, odd/even, columns, dozens, low/high.

Inside bet. Any wager on specific numbers or small clusters - straight up, split, street, corner, six-line.

Column. One of three vertical groups of twelve numbers, paid at 2 to 1.

Dozen. One of three horizontal blocks of twelve numbers (1–12, 13–24, 25–36), paid at 2 to 1.

Single zero (European wheel). 37-pocket wheel with one green 0. House edge 2.70%.

Double zero (American wheel). 38-pocket wheel with 0 and 00. House edge 5.26%.

Sleeper column. A column that has not hit for several consecutive spins. A discipline tool, not a predictive one - the wheel has no memory.

Due-Column terms

Column (Due-Column sense). A series of selections committed to a single target profit, with each stake sized to recover all prior losses plus the target on the next win.

Target profit. The fixed profit to be banked when the column closes.

Carried loss. The sum of all losing stakes inside the current column's ledger.

Cycle. One open-to-close iteration of a column. Most cycles close in 1–3 selections at competent hit-rates.

Recovery row. A multi-column variant in which 2+ columns run in parallel for smoothed drawdown.

Sportsbook terms

Line shopping. Comparing the same bet's price across multiple regulated sportsbooks and placing at the best available. Standard practice for professional bettors.

Vig (juice / overround). The sportsbook's built-in margin. At standard −110 / −110 on both sides, the vig is approximately 4.5%.

Hit-rate. The percentage of selections that win, measured over a meaningful sample. A 55% hit-rate at −110 odds is roughly break-even after vig.

Selection edge. The amount by which a bettor's hit-rate exceeds the implied probability of the offered odds. A real, repeatable edge is rare and the prerequisite for long-term profit.

Responsible-gaming terms

Self-exclusion. A formal commitment to refuse service from a casino or sportsbook for a defined period. Available at every regulated USA and Canadian operator.

GameSense. Canada's standard responsible-gaming framework, available across most Ontario operators.
